Top 10 Distractions for a Writer

These are not in any particular order...

  1. The dog begging for my attention. He's too cute to ignore.
  2. Cold coffee...which means I have to get up from writing and walk downstairs to microwave it.
  3. Someone calls me on the cell. Granted, I don't have to answer it but I'm soooo tempted, thinking it will be a literary agent raving about my book proposal or Rick Springfield inviting me to have coffee with him in Malibu.
  4. Reading Rick's Tweets :)
  5. Seeing that my dog dug a hole in the backyard to escape under the fence
  6. Craving chocolate chip cookies
  7. Needing to floss my teeth. Weird, I know, but true.
  8. Getting stuck on a sentence...which leads to a google search and then clicking on one website after another until I forget what I was searching for in the first place.
  9. Needing to wash clothes or fix dinner.
  10. My butt gets sore from sitting down so long and I want to get up and walk around.
What distracts you from writing?

I have a lot of the same ones - my biggest distraction is people - I love them, but they are always asking me things!

Everything! Because I search for distractions.

For instance, right now, writing a comment on your blog, is a distraction from my working on my column, which is due tomorrow.

I just don't want to get started, not yet, not until I wear out all my creative juices putzing around on other people's blogs so that by the time I get to writing my column, I've got nothing left in my brain but letters and punctuation marks - my inspiration having, as Bukowski might say, run away like wild horses over the hills.
