Once they've reached a certain age, children inevitably ask, "Mommy, where do babies come from?" The heart of the question is really, "Mommy, where did I come from?" Every child wants to know how he or she came into being. It's a question that demands an answer.
You can either explain it in truth or gloss over the question with a story about belly buttons. Today, with Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART) at our disposal the answer can be even more tricky to articulate.
One of the techniques of ART is surrogacy, an option for those who cannot conceive and give birth to a child. When surrogacy enters the picture, it's a much more complicated story to tell a child. I certainly don't have all the answers, and I'm wondering what should you tell a child who asks, "Mommy, where do babies come from?" or "Mommy where did I come from?" This question came to my mind today while I was reading about women in India who serve as surrogates.
What are your ideas? What do you think is the best way to explain to a child (who was birthed by a surrogate) how he/she came into the world?
